"Concert for Kids" Collecting School Supplies

Featuring: Paula West & Bitches Brew
w/ dance performance by: Robert Moses' Kin
What: Benefit concert collecting new school supplies.

Why: Schools supplies are in great demand. This is where you come in. Check your desk drawer and look for anything new (sealed package), or pick something up on they way. Examples include, marker pens, dry erase boards, crayons, rulers, paint supplies, stickers... There is no limit, so be creative. If it's new and you think kids can use it, bring it down. No scissors or other sharp objects please!

About the Artists:
Bring a sweater and join us under the stars as we celebrate our version of the Summer of Love, 40th Anniversary. Cool jazz with Paula West, eclectic Miles by Bitches Brew and a very special dance performance by Robert Moses' Kin. We very proudly describe and present these San Francisco based artists.

PAULA WEST
Paula West, San Francisco's premier jazz vocalist, has always pioneered her own path. It was 1987 when Paula first attended an informal jazz session while holding a day job as a waitress. Today Paula appears before sold-out audiences from San Francisco to New York and Europe.

Paula West describes her appeal best when she says: "I think just about every song is about telling a story and getting that message across." Paula's ability to convey a song's essence allows her to "wear each song like perfectly fitted silk" (SF Chronicle). With a deep feeling for lyrics, a sensuous tension unfolding every line, and a surprising breath control allowing for long sustaining of her notes, Paula West has staked her claim as a star on the contemporary jazz scene.

ROBERT MOSES' KIN
The San Francisco based modern dance company, Robert Moses' Kin, receives national acclaim for its choreography and artistic supremacy. Robert Moses is a bellwether of modern dance, boldly addressing social and philosophical issues without sacrificing the beauty or artistry of movement. Originative vision fused with technically sharp, fearless dancers make Robert Moses' Kin a must see for those seeking excellence in dance performance.

BITCHES BREW
Bitches Brew delivers simmering versions of Miles Davis songs mostly drawn from his electric period (1969-75). In addition to resurrecting classics from the jazz master, Bitches Brew has a cauldron of their own Davis-inspired pieces. "We start from Miles and then jump off!" says Jab, the trumpet player and leader of this ensemble. It's a risky endeavor to cover legends like Miles Davis. Bitches Brew aptly takes that risk and Miles Davis to new heights, allowing the listener to get lost in the groove of the moment, while never forgetting where it came from.

About NextArts:
NextArts produces concerts in public spaces throughout San Francisco. We are a social enterprise that provides special event production services as a means to raise funds to support our concert series. Recognizing the integral role of art and music in San Francisco's culture, NextArts produces our free outdoor concerts in diverse communities.

In 2005, we began asking attendees to bring (new) unused items, with tag still attached for collection and redistribution to worthy charities instead of gated admission. So far we have collected over 2,600 pairs of new socks and underwear and over 1,400 units of school supplies. All new, all with tags still attached.

In 2007 we move our annual concert series to its permanent home - Jerry Garcia Amphitheater. The Amphitheater is located in McLaren Park. Our 2007 concerts will occur on Saturday evenings, September through October, from 6-9:30PM.

We can think of no better venue for the next generation of San Francisco performers, and their performances. We hope you can join us.
